ELKMONT, AL (WAFF) - A Limestone County couple is behind bars after investigators discover severe burns on two children.

The Limestone County Sheriff's Office received a call from a local hospital after a 2-year-old child was brought in with second and third-degree burns covering over 80 percent of her body.

The child was then flown to a Birmingham hospital for treatment, where she is said to be in stable condition.

Investigators say that the child's mother, Amanda Reyer, had told hospital personnel that the child fell into a bathtub full of scalding water.

When sheriff's deputies arrived at her residence on Tillman Mill Road to investigate, Reyer's boyfriend, Derrick Defoe, was there with an infant and a 5-year-old child.

Investigators said the 5-year-old also had second and third-degree burns covering his buttocks and legs. The child was then taken to the hospital but was later flown to Birmingham for treatment. This child's condition is not known at this time.

"I was shocked that they'd got burns from scalding water," said a neighbor, "but I wasn't surprised something happened to them. I think someone needed to intervene years before, and it just didn't happen."

Defoe and Reyer were both arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. Their bond has not been set at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
