GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Paving is now underway for a new Guntersville airport runway.

The city is building a new runway capable of allowing jet aircraft to land.

The current runway is approximately 3,400 feet long. The new runway will be approximately 5,000 feet long.

Winter weather followed by recent rains have hampered construction efforts on the $20-million project.

Approximately 4,000 feet of runway will be completed next month, with the remaining amount concluded by next spring.

Officials are hoping for a mid-to-late June grand opening.
