LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Sheriff Rick Singleton is looking back at the wrongful release of an inmate from the Lauderdale County Jail last week.

Michael Prater was released on probation from the Lauderdale County Jail last week after an employee failed to get Prater's most recent sentence input into the system.

Sheriff Singleton says there was a mistake in policy, and simply put, policy was not followed.

"I don't know how you fix human error, you coach, you train. One thing about this particular incident, I think it's been a pretty significant emotional event for a lot of folks, especially those officers down at the detention center." said Singleton

36 hours after being mistakenly released, Singleton's deputies had Michael Prater back in custody.

The sheriff says they are conducting an internal investigation to get to the bottom of the mistake and they'll take appropriate action.
