The Decatur Police Department's Organized Crime Unit received several complaints of drug activity in the area of East Acres Housing in Decatur on Tuesday.

Officers saw a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign on Locust Street and 16th Avenue and attempted to make a traffic stop.

The driver of the vehicle accelerated and led officers in a chase through an alley at a high rate of speed.

Following a short pursuit, officers were able to make contact with the driver, Maurice Summerville, and the passenger, Alexandra Box.

After a short struggle, Summerville was placed under arrest for attempting to flee or elude a police officer, failing to stop at a stop sign and resisting arrest.

Upon further investigation, officers found a quantity of synthetic cannabinoids, or spice, and a large sum of money consistent with that of drug sales. Officers seized the money and Summerville's vehicle.

Summerville and Box were arrested and transported to the Decatur City Jail.

Summerville was arrested for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, attempt to flee or elude a police officer, stop sign violation, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. He is currently out on bond for other pending charges.

Box was arrested for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence and has been transferred to the Morgan County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 bond.
