ARAB, AL (WAFF) - Many law enforcement agencies will be participating in a statewide effort to deter bad driving over the holidays.

The Arab Police Department is predominantly looking for traffic violations but because it is the holidays, they'll definitely be watching out for those who are driving under the influence.

If you're driving a little too fast over the holidays in Arab don't be surprised if you see some flashing blue lights in your rear view mirror. Arab is participating in the state Blitz program, designed to tackle traffic violations in hot spot areas.

All of these things relate to traffic violations covered in the program and if found guilty can be costly.

While the police department will not be limited in where they go in the city, they will be watching the areas around Main Street and Golfview Drive where they intersect Highway 231, a state determined hot spot area.

"Hot spot areas are areas where intersections where we've had a lot of accidents or a lot of fatalities." said Assistant Chief Shane Washburn with the Arab Police Department. "Basically what we do is go to that area and work a lot of traffic so it initially makes the accidents in that hot spot actually go down."

The Blitz program will continue through the Jan. 1.
