ROGERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Rogersville police officials confirmed the discovery of a body while battling a garage fire Tuesday night.

The Rogersville police chief confirmed crews discovered the body of a person while battling the fire at a property on the 500 block of Tipton Road, just west of Highway 77.

Neighbors said they saw a man go into the shop, then shortly afterward they heard a popping sound. Moments later, the building began to go up in flames.

Crews from Rogersville, Elgin, Central Star and Anderson arrived a few minutes later to a fully-involved fire. About 45 minutes later, when the blaze had been mostly extinguished, crews discovered the man's body, just inside the exit door.

Family members identified the man who died as 88-year-old Joe Romine. They said Romine was a long-time veteran mechanic who performed work in the shop. He was well-known in the area, and was born only about five miles from the scene of the fire.

Romine's son, Jim, said his father heated the area with a wood-burning stove.

The Lauderdale County Coroner has not given an exact cause of Romine's death. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Jim said the neighborhood has already come out in support of the family in their time of grief.
