Florence celebrates W.C. Handy's 141st birthday

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - The Handy Cabin Committee and the Florence Department of Arts and Museums is hosting a celebration for W.C. Handy's 141st birthday.

The party will be on Nov. 16, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the W.C. Handy Home, Museum and Library, 620 West College Street, in Florence. 

The W.C. Handy Birthday Celebration is free and open to the public.

The musical program will be on the front porch of the cabin and will include performances by Harvey Thompson Sr. and Harvey Thompson Jr. In case of bad weather, the program will be held inside the museum.

Harvey Thompson Sr. is a saxophonist and Harvey Thompson Jr. is a keyboardist. The senior Thompson was a member of the Fame Gang and is a founding member of the Muscle Shoals Horns. He played with Elton John, B.B. King, Bob Seger, the Osmonds, Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and others. He is also a member of Little Richard's and Lyle Lovett's bands.

The "Father of the Blues," William Christopher Handy, was born in Florence on Nov. 16, 1873. He was a band conductor, a solo trumpet performer, author, and the composer of such blues classics as the Memphis Blues, Saint Louis Blues, and the Beale Street Blues.
