HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - In less than a week, we've reported on at least three house fires across the Tennessee Valley that firefighters suspect were caused by lightning.

So how can you protect your home?

We checked in with Hooser Bros Electric out of Madison. They recommend a lightning protection system that they install right into the electric box.

"It detects voltage over a certain amount and then dumps all that extra energy to ground," said electrician Nathan Hooser. "In the case of a lightning strike, it would detect that extra voltage and it would send the extra energy to the ground, protecting everything in your house."

That system costs a couple hundred dollars. There are other protection systems out there which involves workers installing copper wire throughout the home and putting rods on the roof.

That system though, will set you back a couple thousand dollars.
