MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A Madison County man was handed a life sentence for crimes of sexual abuse Monday.

Roland Gilbert Campos III, 35, of New Market was convicted of child sex abuse and sodomy in June 2014.

Prosecutors said he molested a 5-year-old girl several times in 2012. The incident happened two years ago while he was dating the victim's mother.

"For the family and the victim, it's been traumatic," said Kathy Zentnor, a family member of the victim. "It's a brave little girl who came forward to put her story out there."

Zentnor said the girl is making progress overcoming the abuse, with the help of family and trained professionals.

Campos was also ordered to submit sampling to a DNA database.
