Restaurant re-opens after salmonella exposure
RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) - For the first time in nearly three weeks, the "Open" sign in front of a Russellville restaurant at the center of a salmonella outbreak is back on.
Earlier this week, health officials cleared El Patron to re-open. Despite sometimes torrential rain Thursday, lunch-goers were eager to get back into the restaurant.
The owners were forced to close their doors after health officials cited their restaurant as the source of salmonella exposure. Officials said 14 people tested positive for the foodborne illness.
Customers that chose El Patron for their meal Thursday said they are not concerned about getting sick. They said it has always been a clean place and that the outbreak could have happened anywhere.
Although the exact source of the salmonella has yet to be determined, health officials believe it was spread via cross-contamination in the kitchen.
