ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - A man is in custody following a shooting that happened Tuesday in Limestone County.
Darrell Adams is accused of shooting another man at a home on Sledge Road, west of Athens.
Authorities said Adams drove there because he had mail for his wife that had been delivered to his home. Her boyfriend, 35-year-old Jason Appleton, came into the yard, and the two began arguing.
Investigators said Adams shot Appleton in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun. When deputies arrived, they discovered the suspect wasn't there - he had gone to work.
"When our officers arrived at the scene, the offender had already left. He works for a farm in the southwestern part of Limestone County, and he was there at work when officers arrested him," said Sheriff Mike Blakely.
Appleton was taken to Huntsville Hospital where is was listed in fair condition in the surgical intensive-care unit.
Adams was arrested and charged with first-degree assault. His bond is $10,000.
