Campers destroyed in Shoals RV park fire
COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Fire destroyed almost a dozen camping trailers at a Shoals RV park early Monday morning.
The fire started at Spring Valley Campground located on Riverton Rose Trail, just a few miles outside of Cherokee.
Multiple fire departments battled the fire. No injuries were reported.
According to the owners, people rent trailers at the campground year-round and are usually on a "come-and-go" basis. The owners don't believe anyone was inside the trailers at time the fire.
Authorities said 11 campers were destroyed and two boats were damaged. Witnesses said the sights and sounds of the fire will be hard to forget. "It sounded like sirens going off, like these tanks were ready to explode," said Judy Myers. "My husband was going to try to help with the boats to get them out of the way, but it was so loud we were afraid it would blow up."
Don Myers said the fire engulfed the surrounding area very fast. "It started down at the far end and came across in a matter of ten minutes," he said.
The State Fire Marshal was called out to the scene to investigate. A cause has not yet been determined.
