FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - A Shoals father is in custody Tuesday night after police said he brought a gun to his child's school.
Florence Police said Derrin Sanders, 39, was acting suspiciously at Hibbett Middle School and a school resource officer was notified.
The officer said Sanders smelled of alcohol and then searched Sanders and found a gun underneath his shirt.
Authorities said he faces a felony charge of bringing a gun onto school property and several misdemeanor charges.
Florence City Superintendent, Dr. Janet Womack, released this statement:
"This afternoon we had an adult who entered Hibbett Middle School and then became unruly. Our administration and School Resource Officer immediately addressed the individual and moved the person outside of the school building. While the Florence Police Department was addressing the situation outside of the school, the individual was found to be in violation of the Open Carry Law on school premises.
"The safety of our students and staff was never compromised. I would like to reassure you that our first priority in educating our students is to ensure their safety while in our care. We cannot always predict the unexpected, but we can ensure that we execute our safety plan flawlessly to ensure the safety of our students and staff."
Sanders is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a $1,500 bond.
No one was injured and no threats were made to the school.
