FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - Two firefighters are recovering from injuries they received after responding to an apartment fire in Florence Wednesday night.
The fire broke out at Heathrow Apartments off of Cloverdale Road just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday. Officials said the fire started on a back porch area. At least four units sustained fire, water and smoke damage.
Two firefighters were injured on the scene. One suffered a back injury while the other experienced heat exhaustion. There were no reported injuries to residents inside.
Resident Mollie Sharp lives in the next building over, and said she had returned home from work Wednesday night when she smelled smoke and heard sirens. She and her fiance had to evacuate for the night.
"It's a desperate feeling not knowing," said Sharp. "We weren't allowed to go in and get anything. My first instinct was it was a house behind our apartments. I was in my pajamas and a pair of socks and that's all I had."
Sharp said she was thankful to be able to eventually return to her unit, and that the only thing she has to clean is the smell of smoke.
Area volunteer fire departments and Killen Fire & Rescue assisted in battling the fire. Investigators along with the state fire marshal are continuing to look for a cause.
