MADISON, AL (WAFF) - Some people don't prefer snakes, lizards and other scaly type animals as pets but for those who do, it takes some work. Pet shop owners said just because you want one, doesn't mean you should get it especially without doing some work first.

David Ballard sells all types of exotic animals at Animal Trax in Madison, but it's caring for them that Ballard said some people aren't ready for.

"I see customers come in, they want something big because they saw it on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet and they want one too and they don't have a through idea of what you have to provide and what you have to do to meet the needs of larger bodied reptiles," Ballard said when it comes to owning pets it pays to do all your research before you take it home.

"It's important that you understand what's required in order to be able to care for your pet and of course some animals require greater considerations," Ballard said.

Those considerations include caging, diet, proper lighting, and heat are all important when dealing with reptiles for pets.

"When you're dealing with snakes that have greater feed requirements they may have a greater feed response or more space," Ballard said.  "There are a lot of these animals that people enjoy but it's not your average household pet or the pet to bring home to the kids necessarily."
