HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - More than 100 teachers from around the world gathered at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Monday for the Space Academy Program.

The program is sponsored through Honeywell Educators. Organizers hope to provide teachers with new skills and teaching techniques that help motivate students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Congressman Mo Brooks was there to to observe the teachers as they took part in the simulated astronaut training missions.

"It's a new experience and then they also get to experience the Huntsville culture, the friendship we offer in North Alabama and take that home with them," said Congressman Brooks.

In all, 185 scholarships were awarded to teachers from 19 countries and 37 states to attend the simulated astronaut training and professional development program.

The program lasts for two weeks.
