Convenience store clerk shoots and kills robber
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Huntsville store clerk fought back when an armed robber entered his store overnight.
Huntsville Police said the clerk at the Atlantis Corner store on Old Monrovia Road was alone when Rodney Cordell Pride entered the business around 9 p.m. Police said he was armed and intended to rob the store.
Officers said the clerk shot the robber inside the store. Pride was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he died.
Police believe Pride may be connected to several other gas station robberies in the area. According to court documents he had a number of previous drug and robbery charges.
The clerk does not face any charges and the case is not being ruled a homicide. The clerk has not been identified.
Huntsville police recommended clerks not take such drastic steps, however.
"Our strategy is it's not worth a life for property and we encourage compliance and non resistance in situations like that," said Dr. Harry Hobbs. "We don't encourage them to be armed but he has his right to be armed."
Clerks and store owners have been on edge after a recent string of burglaries. There have been business robberies 13 out of the last 14 days in Huntsville. Some days have seen multiple robberies.
