DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - A man is charged with murder after being involved in a car wreck that killed a 68-year-old Decatur woman.
Decatur Police said Bessie Louise Stovall was killed instantly. Stovall's granddaughter said she was on her way to go grocery shopping and buy some clothes for her grandchildren when Mitchell Dillan Lindsey's vehicle struck her car.
A preliminary investigation indicated Lindsey was driving fast and erratically. He reportedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Cedar Street and Spring Avenue when his vehicle hit Stovall's car. Police said her car flipped over and hit a utility pole. She died at the scene.
Police officers chased after Lindsey after it was suspected he was driving a stolen vehicle. Police later confirmed the car he was driving was carjacked.
Police also said Lindsey took off on foot then tried to enter a home a short distance away. Officers caught him before he could enter.
He was taken to Decatur General Hospital to treat an injured arm. Lindsey was charged with first degree robbery and murder.
He was booked into the Decatur City Jail. His bond has not yet been set at this time.
Lindsey also had three outstanding felony warrants for credit card fraud and two misdemeanor warrants for Failure to Appear, according to police.
