Madison County Sheriff held a meeting to address Friday's storms.

Sheriff Blake Dorning held a meeting this morning to discuss Friday's storms and the aftermath.

He stressed the point that people who are in damaged areas and are not registered volunteers will be stopped by police.

Volunteers must register to participate. In Madison County, you can check in at Alabama A&M's Health and Wellness Center.

In Athens, you can check in at Canebrake Club.

The Red Cross is in the process of assessing the damage and determining what resources are needed.

Sheriff Dorning also warned home owners to guard themselves against scams.

He said do not trust anyone that offers you services for home repairs in exchange for cash-up-front.

Always get an estimate and make sure they are licensed contractors.

Also, make sure you get an address for the contractor's business.

If they only supply a P.O. box, it is best to protect yourself and use a contractor with a physical address.
