COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - A customer found the "n-word" written on his receipt at a restaurant in Colbert County.

Community members are very upset about what happened. They say words like that cut deep, and it doesn't matter if they are spoken or, in this case, written.

Keenen Porter said he was eating lunch with friends at Standfield's in Ford City when he found the receipt. He said when he was about to leave he picked up his receipt and written on it was the "n-word." He said he couldn't believe what he saw.

Porter says he took the ticket straight to management.

"I brought it to the woman up front. I brought it to her attention as we were getting ready to leave, and she said don't worry about it," he said.

Porter said he is afraid to come back to the restaurant because he is afraid of what they might do to his food.

Mary Ann Hampton said she eats at Stanfield's several times a week, but she said she's troubled after hearing what happened. She and others feel like the restaurant owes Porter an apology.

Stanfield's management says what was written on the ticket had nothing to do with their customers, saying it was a joke between employees.

They declined to comment on camera but did email this statement to WAFF 48:

We have been part of this community for over 20 years. People know who we are and what we stand for. We have apologized and the employee involved has been dealt with accordingly.

Porter said he's going to think twice about the restaurants he chooses.

"I don't want anyone else to go through this but just learn to just watch your surroundings and watch where you eat at," he said.

Management told WAFF 48 the waiter who wrote the "n-word" on the ticket was fired.
