LINCOLN COUNTY, TN (WAFF) - A two-year-old boy is recovering after being mauled by the family dog.

The attack happened in Lincoln County, Tennessee at a house on TMW Road Tuesday night.

Brandi Pearson saw the child's grandmother in the yard holding the little boy in her arms. Pearson said two-year-old Kyle Richardson's head was badly bleeding. Pearson believes she knows why the dog turned on the child.

"The dog had been there a week with no food or water. The little boy was sitting on the front step with food in his hands. My opinion: the dog was going after the food, not the little boy," said Pearson.

"The step-grandfather pulled up, goes back there, tells the cop he is going to kill the dog. He beats the dog half dead," added Pearson.

Animal control officials said that when they arrived the dog had to be put down.

Neighbors said this is not the first time the dog has attacked. There was another incident that happened three weeks ago.

Pearson has a grandson around the same age as Richardson and said the dog also attacked her pit bull.

"The dog should have been fed properly, put up properly. You knew it done bit somebody else, why let any kid around it?" said Pearson.

Richardson was flown to Huntsville Hospital where he is listed in good condition.
