Walters named UAC Offensive player of the week
Sophomore becomes first UNA quarterback to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2018
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Sophomore quarterback Noah Walters was honored by the United Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon, as the league announced Walters as Offensive Player of the Week.
Walters had a light day passing for his standards — completing 13-of-19 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown — but changed the game with his legs. The sophomore quarterback finished with 105 rushing yards on 12 attempts, averaging 8.8 yards per rush in a thrilling 31-30 win over Utah Tech.
The only passing touchdown for Walters came late in the fourth quarter, as the Lions and Trailblazers were tied at 24-24 with under two minutes remaining. Walters lobbed one up for Dakota Warfield, who shifted past two defenders for the go-ahead touchdown.
Walters is the first UNA quarterback to finish with over 100 yards rushing in a game since Christian Lopez ran for 105 at Southern Utah in 2018 — UNA’s first-ever victory as a member of FCS. Before Lopez, the last to do it was Jacob Tucker in 2016 during the NCAA Division II semifinal against Shepherd. Tucker was also the last UNA QB to rush for over 100 yards at Braly before Walters did it.
For the first time in the UAC’s young history, two players shared weekly honors with Walters and Utah Tech quarterback Kobe Tracy both winning Offensive Player of the Week following the one-point thriller at Braly Stadium where both quarterbacks dueled it out at Braly Stadium.
Walters is the third Lion to win a weekly UAC award this season, joining Takairee Kenebrew (Week 1) and Philjae Bien-Aime (Week 3) as past winners. This is not the first weekly award for Walters, as he earned ASUN Freshman of the Week in 2022 for his performance at EKU.
The Lions are on the road this week to face Austin Peay. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Clarksville, Tenn.
