HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education has announced its new superintendent as Dr. Clarence Sutton Jr.

Dr. Sutton Jr. spent time as an administrator in Tuscaloosa and previously served as the interim superintendent of Huntsville City Schools.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity for gaining the trust of the board,” said Dr. Sutton, “I think we have a wonderful city, a wonderful district, and for me to have an important part in this. It’s just overwhelming.”

Dr. Clarence Sutton will now oversee the district’s success after a month-long search involving more than 20 candidates.

The top three candidates came from school districts in Washington, D.C., Birmingham and Huntsville.

Dr. Sutton has served the school district for 3 years as the district’s chief of staff, deputy superintendent of Learning Supports, and chief academic officer.

He said his 30 years in public education will help move the district in the right direction.

As superintendent, Dr. Sutton says he plans to focus on the following areas:

  • Promoting student success
  • Supporting teachers and staff members
  • Creating a new strategic plan for the district
  • Prioritizing system culture, climate, and safety
  • Engaging in strong communication and community engagement

The board unanimously voted Dr. Sutton into his new role, which member Ryan Renaud said was almost a given the input from the community.

“The overwhelming majority of the feedback that we got from this community was that The choice was clear,” said Renaud, “Dr. Clarence Sutton Jr. was the man for the job and our community gave us enough feedback to make that really easy decision today.”

Another topic Dr. Sutton mentioned was creating a new strategic plan for the district to push our education to new heights.

“We will be the best and we will work hard to achieve every goal that we establish,” said Dr. Sutton, “And if we have any challenges, we don’t see them as opportunities to show how great we can be.”
