LAUDERDALE CO., Ala. (WAFF) - The identity of a man who drowned at Joe Wheeler State Park on Sunday has been released.

Lauderdale County Coroner Butch Tucker confirmed that Nicolas Soria of Elkmont, Alabama. Soria was 53 years old. Tucker said that Soria’s body was found in ten feet of water on Sunday.

Park rangers tell WAFF that Soria drowned at the Sandy Beach area of the park. Several agencies were on the scene including Killen Fire Department and Rogersville Volunteer Fire Department.

Dive teams were called in to help recover the body.

“If they had a lifeguard on duty it would probably help prevent this,” said Town Creek resident Juanita Parker. “It would probably prevent the drowning because there are a lot of kids that get out here and don’t pay attention to how far out they get.”
