FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler is responding, after one of his officers died in a car crash late Saturday night. Jason Novak was off duty when the crash happened.
Chief Tyler released a statement saying “We have been in contact with Jason’s family who are from out of state. In an effort to honor their wishes, we have offered to help coordinate a private ceremony to honor him. He was a very good friend and colleague who will be dearly missed. As a police officer, he served the Florence community honorably for more than 20 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family during this time. On Saturday night, we requested the assistance of ALEA to conduct the crash investigation. Any specific information regarding the crash will be provided by ALEA.”
State Troopers say the wreck happened at 10:53 p.m. on Pine Street in Florence, near the campus of UNA. Novak was killed when the BMW he was driving collided with a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by 26-year-old Laiken Paige Owen of Florence. Owen was also transported for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
