Emergency crews respond to explosion, fire at Huntsville asphalt plant

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - WAFF 48 was first on the scene to a reported explosion and fire in Huntsville on Thursday.

Emergency officials responded to the reported explosion at Reed Contracting off of Nick Fitcheard Road.

Huntsville Fire, Monrovia Fire and HEMSI arrived and prepared for a potential hazmat situation.

Huntsville Fire Deputy Chief Wesley Ogle says the call went out just after 5 a.m. from the Reed facility.

He says workers were going through a normal cleaning process using diesel fuel to clean their chains.

The diesel fuel caused extreme heat buildup, which then resulted in a small explosion.

Nothing was damaged, other than some plywood that was burnt.

The scene is now clear and safe.
