MADISON, Ala. (WAFF) - Baseball fans in north Alabama will have to wait another year for the return of professional baseball. The Rocket City Trash Pandas will not play until 2021.
All Minor League Baseball this year, including the Trash Pandas, has been canceled because of the rising number of coronavirus cases.
Trash Pandas CEO Ralph Nelson spent a lot of time getting the stadium and organization ready for opening day, but he never could have imagined this global pandemic. There are 1,900 season ticket holders and he says as of now, only two have asked for their money back.
He says the Trash Panda office will reach out to ticket holders by next week to discuss further options. Right now, he is challenging his staff to shift gears from baseball to event planning and merchandise sales.
Nelson confirmed that three employees have been let go as a result of the canceled season.
Now, the team is looking ahead to the 2021 season.
