Madison County Commission votes to move Confederate statue

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A Madison County commissioner made a move to relocate the Confederate statue outside the county courthouse.

The debate and vote on the removal resolution.

District 6 Commissioner JesHenry Malone introduced a resolution to move the monument to an area cemetery. Maple Hill Cemetery was mentioned by Commissioner Phil Vandiver in his remarks to the commission.

The resolution was passed by a unanimous voice vote of the commission.

The City of Huntsville released statements on the relocation vote on Wednesday as well.


“The City of Huntsville pledges to work hand in hand with the Madison County Commission to help them find a suitable home for the monument in an appropriate historic context.”


“I am proud of the actions taken by the Madison County Commission to begin the process of relocating the statue. I am introducing a resolution in support of this effort at Thursday night’s City Council meeting.”
