BPD: Woman became disorderly in Walmart before the use of force, she faces several charges
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: The 18-year-old whose arrest at a Birmingham Walmart was caught on camera, has been identified as Krystulien Leian Smith.
The video began circulating the internet because of a “Takedown Measure” the officer used to force Smith to comply.
Birmingham police say the reason for the officer’s contact with Smith in Walmart Tuesday, May 5 was because of disorderly conduct. She was asked by a Walmart employee to put on a face covering before coming in the store, when her conduct became became disorderly.
The officer, who working in an off-duty capacity, said Smith began yelling obscenities at people when asked to leave the store refused to do so.
The officer used the takedown measure to gain control because of the other threat factors in the store.
According to police, Smith was not injured and refused medical evaluation.
Smith has been charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing third degree, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Police say their internal affairs division is looking into the incident - which is part of the protocol any time force is used in a police incident - and that often involves talking to the officers and witnesses.
The incident was recorded on camera.
Birmingham officers say through education they have been successful when it comes to the stay at home order and face covering order.
