HARVEST, Ala. (WAFF) - Investigators say a five-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after a shooting on Berrycreek Drive in Harvest.
When deputies arrived they found the victim with what appeared to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. HEMSI personnel were on the scene and attempted life saving measures to no avail. The child was rushed to Huntsville Hospital’s Madison ER, but died of their injuries.
Friends and family identified the five-year-old as Maxton Hughes, a Huntsville Police Officer’s son.
A spokesman for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office told 48 News the boy found the gun inside the family’s vehicle. It is unclear if the gun was the officer’s personal weapon or city-issued service weapon.
The investigation is on-going; however, no charges are expected. The state’s Child Death Review Team will now look into the accidental shooting. The review team that investigates the case is made up of local and state experts. This type of review happens for every child death in the state. They identify trends that put children at risk with the goal of preventing further tragedies.
Sheriff Kevin Turner said, “This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
A memorial fund has been set up for the family through Redstone Federal Credit Union.
