ROGERSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - More than half of the campgrounds and the entire day area at Joe Wheeler State Park are ruined. Rangers say it is the biggest devastation to the park they’ve ever seen.
“There’s not one tree that’s not damaged. If they’re not down, they’re mangled," said Rogersville Mayor Richard Herston.
Herston says it broke his heart when he got the news there had been damage at Joe Wheeler.
“It was really hard to see," he said. “We will come back, but we have a long way to go.”
Park superintendent Chad Davis says most of the campground and all of the day use area are destroyed.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Davis said.
For months ahead, crews will work to clear debris and do their best to restore this area of the park.
Davis says the campground and day use areas will be closed for renovation, but the rest of the park is expected to open up Thursday.
The National Weather Service plans to survey Joe Wheeler State Park Thursday.
