DAR football player killed in vehicle crash

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - DAR High School is mourning one of its student athletes.

Eli Spray was killed in a vehicle crash with a wrecker on Simpson Point Road Friday morning around 8:30.

ALEA reports, he collided with a Freightliner tow truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tow truck wasn’t injured.

Eli played on the Patriots football team. DAR Football Head Coach Joel Poole says he was a great young man.

“He was a pretty serious guy. He’s a big bear with a big smile. A real leader on the team. When Eli talked, the kids listened. It’s a terrible loss for our community,” Poole said.

The Patriots played against Brindlee Mountain. Both teams played in his honor. The Patriots won 43-8.

Before the game, his cousin and teammate presented his jersey to his parents. The Patriots retired his jersey, number 77, to honor Eli’s legacy.
