OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. (WAFF) - Authorities are investigating a fatal vehicle fire on Old Big Cove Road Friday afternoon.

The Madison County Coroner said an elderly man in the vehicle was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed next week.

The office has not released the identity of the man.

Owens Cross Roads Police Chief Jason Dobbins said the department will be working with the fire marshal authorities to figure out why the car caught on fire.

Contractor Curtis Jordan said he was working when the car came down the road.

“We noticed some smoke billowing up a 100 yards up the road, we went to investigate to see a vehicle on fire, stalled in the middle of the road,” he said.

He said he and his crew grabbed fire extinguishers and jumped into action, but it was too late.

The car was a fireball, and the man inside was dead.

“It was just not not enough to put out what we needed to get put out,” he said.

"Called 911, set up for people to get here, and take over."

For Jordan, it's a reminder of our mortality.

“There’s no easy way to comfort death in something like this.”
