HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WAFF) - A bus from Hazel Green Elementary School caught fire Monday afternoon.
Officials say no students were on the bus. They are safe at school and will be given another ride home.
School spokesperson Tim Hall said the bus was parked in front of the school and that the driver was preparing students to board when the fire broke out. Hall said other drivers pulled up behind the bus and noticed it was on fire. Those bus drivers immediately called 911 and then jumped into action using their own fire extinguishers to keep the fire under control until the Hazel Green volunteer fire department arrived.
Hall credited quick thinking and actions from bus drivers and other school staff for keeping students safe.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known. Hall said the school system would investigate to make sure this doesn’t happen again. He couldn’t offer immediate details about who would actually look into it.
