Pedestrian dies after being hit by street sweeper

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Huntsville police tell us a pedestrian has died after being hit by a street sweeper owned by his employer, Powervac Services, LLC, on his way to a job site.

The pedestrian-involved wreck happened at University Drive and Putman Drive on Friday night just before 8:30. Police say a female was struck by a vehicle and was taken to Huntsville Hospital where she later died.

Multiple witnesses confirmed that driver had a green light, and that the pedestrian walked into the path of the vehicle without making any attempt to avoid a collision.

She was in a crosswalk, but it appears that she caused the crash by crossing the street against a red “Don’t Walk” pedestrian signal and walking in front of traffic.

Police say the preliminary evidence shows the pedestrian may be at fault for walking or running out into traffic.

Drug and alcohol use are not believed to be a factor. No charges are expected against driver 1.
