Robocalls targeting senior citizens have surpassed IRS scam calls

Robocalls pass IRS scheme calls for seniors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Robocalls continue to be a pest for people all over the country and right here in Alabama. Especially our seniors. They are prime targets for possible scams. People in Birmingham received about 43 million Robocalls in April alone.

The Federal Trade Commission now reports robocalls targeting senior citizens have surpassed IRS scam calls. The crooks are phishing for social security numbers. The scam could lead to illegal loans in your name.

The Association of Mature American Citizens reported that this year, nationally, there have been 36,000 complaints and almost seven million dollars in loses in the last two months. At the Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama, robocalls are the number one complaint they get. So what should you do?

“We tell people never to answer calls from numbers they don’t recognize. So if you get a call from a number you don’t recognize let it rollover to voice mail.” Andi Kral, of BBB of Central Alabama said.

The FCC is pushing legislation to get phone companies to block certain calls. That legislation would protect phone companies from being liable for blocking calls.
