First nurse midwife in 20 years is delivering babies at Huntsville Hospital
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A new option for Tennessee Valley women.
The option when it comes to how they’d like to deliver their babies but who especially.
In an exclusive interview, WAFF 48 News spoke to a certified nurse midwife, the first in more than 20 years to deliver babies at Huntsville Hospital.
Tiffany Golub, CNM, CRMP, has officially joined the staff at Women4Women OBGYN as the only certified nurse midwife practicing in Huntsville.
“Midwives are really experts in normal pregnancies, lower intervention births. Physicians are experts in higher-risk pregnancies, surgical procedures, and that’s their specialty,” said Golub.
Golub, a graduate of Georgetown University's Nurse-Midwifery/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Program, will deliver babies exclusively at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. She will provide prenatal care and general GYN services such as annual exams at Women4Women OBGYN.
The term mid-wife actually means with woman and there are different kinds.
"A lot of clarifying, misconceptions of what they think a mid-wife is as far as thinking that all mid-wives only do home births and only provide care for women who are wanting that," added Golub.
Getting approval for being in a hospital setting didn’t come without challenges. Dr. Anne Marie Reidy, founder of Women4Women and Collaborating Physician, explains.
“There is malpractice insurance, regular insurance, hospital privileges and the physicians collaborating so it is a lot of moving parts to coordinate. This has been my dream since Women4Women OBGYN is to have regular OBGYN care and midwifery care so we could appeal to all different types of women and all different deliveries.”
Prior to joining Women4Women OBGYN, Golub was a Labor and Delivery nurse at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children for over ten years. The Huntsville native will begin seeing patients this month.
