FALKVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Falkville Police Chief Chris Free has resigned.
The resignation was confirmed by town attorney Larry Madison.
Madison said Free’s attorney submitted the resignation at a town council meeting on Wednesday.
In March, the town council placed him on administrative leave with pay and benefits. That was a direct result of an ongoing FBI investigation, according to Falkville Mayor Ken Winkles. He wouldn’t say what the investigation is about.
Madison said as far as he knows, the investigation has not concluded.
Free has served as Falkville’s police chief for the past 13 years.
Capt. Aaron Burgess, will continue to act as administrator for the department.
The council will make a decision on appointing a new chief at a later date.
