MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Students at Monrovia Elementary got a chance to speak with a Holocaust survivor Monday thanks to a little help from technology.
Fifth-graders were able to FaceTime with Ruth Gruener. She was a hidden child during the Holocaust, and the book “Destined To Live” tells her story.
The students read the book, penned by Gruener and her husband, Jack, who is also a Holocaust survivor.
“She was a little girl during the war with the Germans and Russians and she had to hide with a bunch of different people, and we got to FaceTime her and ask her different questions and what she got to go through,” said student Lela Hoover."
“It was heartbreaking what they struggled with. It was horrible," said Savannah Jackson, another fifth-grader.
The students also recently read “The Diary of Anne Frank” as part of their studies.
