Car thefts and break-ins are on the rise in Florence

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - Car thefts and break-ins are on the rise in Florence. The biggest mistake people make is leaving bags, weapons, and personal belongings in.

Florence police officer Justin Hill says as the temperatures start to warm up this time of year crimes begin to rise in the Shoals.

He says thieves are looking for crimes of opportunity never leave a spare key in your car or leave it running unattended. Dark parking lots are where many thieves break into vehicles so always park in a well-lit area.

Hill says cars aren't the only place thieves are trying to break-in too.

It’s travel season for many families so prowlers will be looking for homes unoccupied overnight.

Avoid posting pictures until after your vacation. Get a home surveillance system to monitor your home while your away.

“If you have good neighbors and trust your neighbors by all means let them know your going out of town for a few days can you keep an eye on my home,” said Hill.

Florence police want to remind everyone to double check your car doors are locked every night.

Also, if you do plan on going out of town this summer contact your local enforcement office before you leave and request for a patrol officer to watch your home while you are away.

Also leave a light on inside and outside your home.
