LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Lauderdale County’s jail situation isn’t any better.
The sheriff is trying to figure out what to do about overcrowding.
Even with a new female detention center, there are more inmates than bed spaces.
And the situation is making it dangerous for inmates and jailers.
“The dormitory has freed up some space but not enough for the male inmates. We’re still over our capacity and it looks like will continue to be over capacity at the women’s dorm," said Jason Butler with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
Right now, the women’s dormitory can hold 53 inmates, but there are currently 83 behind bars.
Lauderdale County leaders are working with the County Commission to figure out a way to pay for a new jail.
