JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A former student at McAdory High School was arrested Friday morning after bringing a loaded gun to the school, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

The student is 17-years-old. The staff and students at the school found him with the gun in a bathroom. The sheriff’s office says right now the former student is charged with two counts of criminal trespassing and one count of giving false information to a police officer. More charges are likely according to the sheriff’s department.

Melissa Crooks works with the parent of a student and heard their account of what happened this morning.

“That he had come to the school with a gun and pulled a gun, and apparently at that point, all the teachers grabbed their students and put them in lockdowns in their rooms. The kid apparently took off running and they didn’t know where he was at and from what i understand the police, or the sheriffs found him in the restroom hiding”.

She says schools need to do more to protect students.

“With children’s lives at stake, we either need to hire more policemen or schools need to let go of some money and hire private undercover cops.”

For Crooks, this event has her worrying about what her young nieces might have to deal with and she worries for friends with young children.

“You just stop and think about what they’re going to grow up with,”

Jefferson County schools tell us security is a top priority for them. They say they have SRO’s and cameras at every school, cameras on the school buses, night-lock safety devices installed on every classroom door, they installed storefront security doors in the schools, and they are currently installing key cards.
