WMEL and 3M reach settlement agreement

MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - The West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority and the 3M Company Inc. reached a settlement agreement on Friday morning.

In April, the West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority board unanimously approved a settlement with 3M Company, Inc.When the approved settlement was reached an approved rate increase was canceled.

The board’s unanimous vote came after they met for 50 minutes in executive session. Lawyers at the meeting declined to comment until a joint statement is released.

On Friday, WMEL and 3M releases joint statements after they settled the lawsuit between them in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.

“This settlement will allow for a new filtration system at WMEL. WMEL will continue to supply safe drinking water that meets all applicable PFAS guidelines without passing on any additional construction or treatment costs – a great thing for WMEL and its customers in Morgan and Lawrence Counties. This settlement pertains only to the lawsuit between WMEL and 3M. Now that the litigation between WMEL and 3M is concluded, neither 3M nor WMEL will make any further statements"
