Students save competitors from sinking boat at Shoals fishing tournament

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) - Two young men became heroes over the weekend after saving two people from a sinking boat during a weekend fishing tournament in Sheffield.

It started out all fun and games for anglers at the Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association tournament. But that all ended shortly after Garrett Howington and Issac Darden saw their competitors’ boat sinking down into Pickwick Lake.

Tournament director Shane Mansell who said by the time he got to the sinking vessel, Howington and Darden already started helping get them to safety.

“We run up to Cypress Creek and get their all the anglers and the boat captain are off on another boat safe. We get them off on the dock and are able to tie their boat off to keep from sinking anymore," Mansell said.

Mansell says he’s proud to see how quickly the boys reacted to help save a life.

“They were able to keep them out of the water and keep them from being cold. I would say it was heroic in that aspect," he said.

Mansell says this a good reminder for boaters and anglers to remain calm when a crisis occurs. It also important to always be wearing a life jacket while out on the water.
