FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - Authorities say one person is dead after an overnight house fire in Florence.
According to Florence Fire and Rescue, a fire broke out around 2 a.m. Monday on Stuart Avenue.
The cause is under investigation, but firefighters say they have reason to believe it was some sort of explosion.
Neighbors say it sounded as if the house exploded. Neighbors on Stewart Avenue say they thought they heard a rumble of thunder in the sky, but when they looked outside all they could see was a massive blaze.
Garrett Citrano lives four houses down. When he opened his front door to go outside, he couldn’t breathe because the smoke was so thick.
Neighbors say they felt the ground shaking as they watched firefighters try to put out the flames.
“The firefighters ran out of water so they had to hook it up to the hydrant, but within minutes the flames were massive you could feel the heat from the road," said Citrano.
Florence fire Investigators and the state fire marshal say it could take a few days to a week to find out exactly what happened.
