Traffic stop ends in officer-involved shooting in north Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Huntsville police confirm there was an officer-involved shooting off Wilkenson Drive Monday afternoon.

Police have not yet said what happened. One person was taken to the hospital. That person’s injuries are not yet known.

Around 4:30 p.m., a Huntsville police officer pulled someone over for a traffic violation. Police say that during the stop, the suspect got out of his vehicle and a physical confrontation occurred between the officer and the driver.

Police say during the struggle the officer was stunned with a stun gun, forcing the officer to discharge his firearm, striking the offender. The offender was transported to Huntsville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was treated and released.

Archie Lee Hamlet III was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer.

The officer received minor injuries during the incident and was treated on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

Per policy, a shooting review board will be convened within the next two weeks. The officer will he placed on administrative duty until the conclusion of the review process.
