LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - An Athens woman is wanted by the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly taking cash and property from an elderly man’s home while he was in the hospital. Her boyfriend has been arrested as part of the investigation.
Amber Deann Roberson, 31, has arrest warrants for first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call 256-232-0111.
Jason Bernard Gilbert, 39, was arrested on the same charge. He is being held in the Limestone County Jail on $5,000 bond.
Deputies took a burglary report from Roberson’s former neighbor on Sept. 29. The 77-year-old victim reported that he had been in the hospital and found over $2,500 in cash and property missing from his home when he returned. He told investigators that Roberson checked on him weekly since his wife passed away, and she was the only one with a key.
Investigators found that Roberson had called the hospital on the day the property went missing to check on the victim. Investigators believe she was checking to make sure he was still in the hospital and not at home.
Deputies say Gilbert was also caught on security footage selling some of the stolen items at a local business. They said Gilbert changed his story during questioning several times before confessing.
Due to the circumstances, investigators changed the charge from burglary to financial exploitation of the elderly and obtained warrants on both Roberson and Gilbert.
