DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - The state rested Wednesday after some gruesome testimony in the Geneva Denson murder trial. She's charged with killing her mentally challenged cousin, disposing of his body and cashing his Social Security checks.

However, Denson told a judge Wednesday that Ronnie Goree may not be dead. She said a story about him dying, being placed in a cave, buried and later dug up was made under her duress and threats by investigators. That's a charge the investigators denied.

But the story went further during testimony by Evelyn Routh. This time it included intentional strangulation and other gory details. Those details have divided a family of five sisters and three brothers, according to Ronnie's cousin, Pamela Goodwin.

"It's pulling everybody apart, and if she had accept a plea deal it would have not made more separation between the family," Goodwin said.

Family is at the heart of Geneva Denson's trial. Her mother and Ronnie Goree's mother are sisters. And some family members, according to Goodwin, are taking sides.

"Some play both sides to meet in the middle," Goodwin said. "The others just form their own opinion."

By the end of Wednesday, the prosecution had rested and the defense began to present their case. The case is expected to go to the jury Thursday.
