Hiker rescued from Bankhead National Forest

MOUNT HOPE, AL (WAFF)- A Cullman man is recovering after being injured while hiking.

Rescue crews in Lawrence County located the injured hiker Sunday evening in the Bankhead National Forest.

Rescuers told WAFF 48 News that two Cullman men were hiking in the Bankhead National Forest Sunday afternoon in the Lawrence County community of Mount Hope.

They said it appears one of the men broke his leg, and the other had to hike out of the heavily-wooded area to get a cellphone signal to call for help.

Multiple agencies worked on the rescue.

Rescuers combed the forest for hours before finally locating the man.

Crews said the narrow trails made it difficult for them rescue him because they couldn't get the equipment they needed into the woods.

The injured man was taken to Cullman Regional Medical Center for treatment.
