Some favor keeping Anniston incinerator

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - Destroying chemical weapons became an industry in Calhoun County that two key elected officials favor keeping now that the nerve gas stockpile has been safely destroyed.

Calhoun County Commission Chairman Eli Henderson and Anniston Mayor Gene Robinson said they would keep the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility operating.

But Gov. Bob Riley says he opposes any proposal to bring any more chemical weapons into the county.

County Commissioner Robert Downing also joined other officials in opposition to such a proposal.
